Urban Oriental Dragon (2022)
Legends in both Japan and China say that Oriental Dragons are direct reflections of the environment they protect. I bet the ancient dragons were lush like the greenery that covered their turf, and strong like the animals that roamed it. What about today though? The fun in using laser cut pieces of acrylic as a medium of sculpture is similar to that of a puzzle. How can you use an almost two-dimensional material to make something three-dimensional? This piece is also similar to my Tamagokake Gohan video piece where an element of Shintoism is involved. This Oriental Dragon is an amalgamation of abandoned, thrown away spirits, and its scales of garbage grows in count by the day.
